(OT) Adding a ribbon tweeter to my speakers?

I just got them laying on top of the cabinets for now. (technically there's really no better place for them :/ )

Technically, there is, vertically oriented to the outside of the driver, i.e. mirror imaged speakers, then toe them in as required to get the desired blend and to reduce reflections off of side walls towards the listening position.

Cradeldorf, I finally listened to your videos, I like Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin the best. They sound like poor recordings playing through Altecs on my Altecs. I know nothing about your 604s, but all of the other Altec systems I have been looking at have something like a mere 33 or so sq. in. port opening, are you sure you have your boxes figured out right? Also, shouldn't the super tweeter's voice coils be more in line with those in you 604's?

The only thing I have a problem with about that suggestion is when I added them small tweeters to the old cabinets I had them right against the edge of the 604 and I could tell the source point was coming from 2 totally different places.

Bottom line is you have to put them where they sound the best to you in your room with your acoustics with your custom cabs. If you've tried moving them around and have found that where they are now sounds like one source point as opposed to other locations for them, then you've got them where they need to be for your room/cabs/acoustics.

No I didn't really calculate my boxes too well but I can assure you they sound friggin awesome!!!! I'm not to fond of the traditional cabinet size vs port thing There has been too many times where I have found they have way more potential if you think outside of the box so to speak.

No matter how much research you do, getting those cabinets tuned to sound the best with your drivers in your room/acoustics is going to be very much an empirical/trial and error proposition. You can punch numbers into a formula/calculator and come with an "ideal" port (and cabinet) size but that only puts you in the ballpark at best. Just ask Greg and others who really know this stuff. I know you've made several attempts at this with different cabinets and port sizes and have finally got a cabinet and port size that sounds great with your drivers and acoustics. You even mentioned in an earlier thread you experimented with how far you positioned the cabs from the wall to see what sounded the best as far as speaker placement. You've also tried adding different types of tweeters and experimented with tweeter position, different caps to bring them in seamlessly, etc. That's the best anyone can do IMHO--trial and error with everything I've mentioned above, to come up with what sounds the best with your drivers/cabs/acoustics to you. From your description of how they sound now I think you hit a home run. Congrats! BTW, what caps did you end up using for the new tweeters?

Correctomundo and why I always recommend one build the largest cabs practical with some means of easily tuning the vent to ensure adequate tuning flexibility in-room. It's far easier to shrink a cab to fit the acoustics than stretch it or worse, have to start all over again or accept a compromised response. This has been both the bane and boon of the T/S filter design routine that pares away all the excess 'fat' when folks use basic small signal measurements and don't factor in additional series resistance and thermal power spikes that demand a larger cab tuned lower to allow a driver to sound as life-like as it can within its limits rather than the cab's

+1 That's where I went wrong with my project.And am now paying for it.All the panels are fixed.The ports I need to get right as I will have an issue to resize.So I'm paying for a poorly thought out cab WRT the port tunings. I won't make that mistake again.
